Chapter Seventeen

On Wednesday morning, Jarvis went to Jeffrey Lindell's office and the lawyer met with him immediately. Jarvis carried with him the tape and freshly printed pictures that he'd taken of Mrs. Lindell and her lover.

"Mr. Jarvis, thank you for coming," Lindell said with a nervous smile that matched the nervous, sweaty handshake, "I didn't expect you so soon."

"Mr. Lindell…" Jarvis didn't know quite how to broach the subject of his first client's wife's affair. He didn't want to give him the pictures or the tape. Jarvis had had a bad night with the information he'd gathered on the man's wife and despite what Sharon had said, Jarvis still felt like the lowest form of wretched life on the planet.

Jarvis' mood was not lost on Lindell. The lawyer’s fake smile was immediately replaced with the most pathetically deflated expression that Jarvis could ever remember seeing. Despite how strongly Lindell felt that his wife was cheating on him, he still had been holding on to a flimsy thread of hope, "I was right, wasn't I?"

"Yes," Jarvis mumbled and handed over his evidence, "I found out last night. I have pictures of them, and I also have this tape…"

Lindell didn't have to ask what was on it, "I see…"

"I suggest you handle this with extreme care," Jarvis warned, "Don't listen to the tape . . . it's… it's not something you will want to hear, and I can see that you don't need to."

Lindell's face was steadily going ashen, "Uhm… thank you, detective. What… what do I owe you?"

Jarvis handed him a bill, he hadn't had the heart to charge even two hundred for the camera, "Four hundred and fifty. Two-fifty for one day's work and I also included lunch, part of my camera price. Mr. Lindell, I'm very sorry."

"Don't be," Lindell said after a sigh and a sorry attempt at composure, "Not your fault. At least now I know. Whatever else happens, I'll know the truth."

This time, Lindell’s attempt at composure worked. He squared his shoulders and straightened to his full height. The man took on a facade of strength that Jarvis had not thought the little man capable, “There’s a lot to do, Mr. Jarvis. But I can start to fix this, one way or another. I’m not sitting around wondering what’s going on. Sometimes wondering is the worst. This is terrible news, believe me, but it’s something I can work with.”

“Talk to her,” Jarvis said almost pleadingly, “Save your marriage, Jeff. Find out why she’s seeing someone else. Tackle this problem and solve it, for both your sakes.”

A small smile crossed the man’s face, “Yes. I hope I can. Maybe it’s my fault… but I’m going to find out for sure now. Thank you again.”

The man’s brave front was somewhat reassuring to Jarvis, but he still felt he’d done Lindell a disservice, despite what the lawyer had told him. He thought about saying more, but Jarvis realized there was no support he could offer this man. He didn’t know Lindell and he didn’t know his wife.
